drum ‘n’ voice performance St Martins Art College 107-109 Charing Cross Road Soho WC2
10th - 20th September, 2007 live nightly at 6pm weekdayslive in the window

Scratch Attitude presents broken word and live drum ‘n’ voice Scratch Attitude presents eleven days of installation and performance in the St Martins College Of Art Window Gallery on London’s busy Charing Cross Road.

The two artists involved, Clive Alexander Stewart and Graeme Andrew Milton, share similar concerns with media and misinformation - though their ripostes differ, and as well as exhibiting in the two windows, will perform live Drum ‘n’ Voice nightly at 6pm in the south window.

The exhibition can only be viewed from the street, making the performance aspect particularly enthralling. A form of re-telling the news, with Clive reading from his canvases containing amongst other things: carefully collaged media stories, 18th century newspaper quotes from foreign visitors to the capital, and literary references – backed by tight beats played live on drum kit – the performances promise to add a visceral edge to proceedings. The pieces are short and sharp, and some are quite confrontational. After each Public View, all are welcome for drinks, opposite St Martins at the Phoenix Theatre Bar.

The work has in the past been described by one critic as ‘definitely not bongos and poetry,’ and the artists confess that this statement is fairly accurate.

Clive and Graeme are not students and wish to thank St Martins Art College for use of the Window Gallery and also Jonathan at The Foundry, without whom this exhibition would not have been possible. Graeme would also like to thank POLYComp UK.
